Dominion's Rodent Defense

Are you struggling with a mouse problem in your home?

If DIY methods and snap traps haven't worked, it may be time to consider calling in the professionals.

Every situation is unique, which is why all effective mouse treatments start with a thorough inspection to identify any and all potential entry points.

Mice are very routine. Once they learn a navigation route, they never forget it.

When all entry points are located we will begin to place appropriate amounts of bait in the proper locations as well as using tamper-proof bait stations to ensure all bait is inaccessible to your children and pets.

Your family's safety is always our top priority.

After our treatment is completed we will schedule a follow-up appointment to help determine the size of the mice population as well make the necessary adjustments to tailor the best solution for your needs.

There are other options for mice control besides rodenticides, but here is why we don't recommend it:

Although exclusion is an appropriate control measure, it is not always realistic. Mice can fit through an opening as small as a dime which can make it very difficult to completely seal your home. Not to mention they can chew through most materials, ultimately rendering time and money spent on exclusion ineffective.

Many of our customers (understandably so) don't like the thought of killing mice and would prefer to use what is considered more "humane" methods such as: catching and releasing them.

But here is why live traps are NOT recommended:

1.) If released too close to your home they will continue to find the scent trail and reenter your home, perpetually repeating the process.

2.) Releasing a mouse a long distance from your home into an unfamiliar area will almost surely result in the animal’s death. Many times relocated animals don’t know where to find the appropriate food, water, or shelter and often become victim to predation from other wildlife, foreign parasites and diseases which they lack natural immunity.

Although we don't want to kill them - they can and will cause unsanitary conditions as well as serious damage to your home. Not only do they leave behind trails of feces and urine they also carry diseases such as Hantavirus, which is why we don't recommend handling them yourself. Mice also frequently chew wires which can lead to fires in your home.

The truth is without rodenticides mice and rats would rapidly overpopulate and take over our neighborhoods. There has even been cases in countries that attempt to limit rodenticides like Australia where mice have decimated crops and even eaten babies alive in their cribs.

To truly be 'environmentally friendly' - we must act as stewards and properly manage our environment by not allowing it to be destroyed by pests. We believe that not using rodenticides is more harmful to our environment.

Some of our customers have expressed concerns about the effects of "secondary poisoning."

The thought is that pets or wildlife will capture and consume mice that have recently fed on rodenticide.

The rodenticide that we use is called Contrac, and is manufactured by Bell Labs. According to the manufacturer, a animal needs to consume 5-10% of its body weight to advise treatment from a veterinarian.

For instance, if you have a 10 pound cat, it is estimated that your cat would have to consume a minimum of 8 mice (if each mouse weighed 1 ounce) in a single feeding before your cat would require medical care.

We are not aware of too many well fed house cats that are interested in consuming that many mice - in one sitting!

With that being said, we also always strive to go above and beyond the minimum standards and only apply rodenticides when absolutely necessary.
