Dominion's Sawtoothed Grain Beetle Defense
Oryzaephilus surinamensis
When your cereal has more crunch than it should — and it’s moving — you’re probably dealing with Sawtoothed Grain Beetles.
Sawtoothed Grain Beetles are tiny, flat-bodied pests that love to hide in cracks and crevices of food packaging — especially in dry goods.
They’re named for the six sharp, tooth-like projections on each side of their thorax, giving them a “saw-edged” appearance under magnification.
Measuring only about 2.5 to 3 mm long, they’re small but mighty — and one of the most common invaders of stored food in homes, grocery stores, warehouses, and food-processing facilities.
These beetles thrive in dry food products like flour, cereal, pasta, pet food and birdseed.

Once they find a food source, they can multiply quickly, making your pantry their permanent residence.
Sawtoothed Grain Beetles typically arrive via infested food items from the store.
The larvae, which resemble tiny white worms, feed inside the food, while adults crawl around on the surface.
Signs of an infestation include: tiny beetles crawling in food containers, on shelves, or around countertops, and holes in packaging or spilled dry goods.

If you’ve noticed beetles hanging around your baking supplies or breakfast staples, it’s likely time for a deeper look.
Although Sawtoothed Grain Beetles don’t bite or transmit disease, they contaminate food and can cause significant losses — especially for businesses in food production, packaging, or retail.
They’re also hard to eliminate without professional help, as they often hide deep inside cracks and wall voids.
